The two topics to be discussed are as follows:
Copyright Issues for Design Professionals – This seminar explores the rights and responsibilities of a design professional under current Copyright Laws in relation to its own work product; the use of its work product by others; and the design professional’s use of work product prepared by others in the takeover or completion of a project. Claim scenarios involving copyright situations are interactively used to gain an understanding of copyright issues, exposures and protection from suit.
Claim Scenarios, Avoiding Malpractice – Claim scenarios are used to introduce and discuss risk exposure during all phases of a project from contract formation to documenting to project close-out. Participates will review real life claim scenarios and outcomes to learn about avoiding common causes of malpractice.
The event will be facilitated by Bruce R. Demeter, Vice President - Design Professional Liability at OneBeacon Insurance. Bruce came to OneBeacon from Fireman's Fund Insurance Company where he developed their design professional, miscellaneous and excess product lines. Prior to being at the Fund, Bruce was a Senior Vice President in XL Insurance's Specialty Corporate Underwriting office. Prior to joining XL Insurance, Bruce was a founding member and Vice President of the construction litigation law firm Simon & Demeter, P.A. Bruce holds a J.D. with Honors from Rutgers Law School. He has Undergraduate and Graduate degrees from the University of Delaware where he has been a member of the University of Delaware's Political Science Department faculty for over a decade. He teaches Constitutional Law and Introduction to Law each school year.
